Impression d'Artois

"Impression of Artois"

Year: 2023

Size: 420mm* 297mm

Medium: Acrylic on Paper

I chose this image as a testament to my profound appreciation for European classical architecture and the rich tapestry of history that envelops the continent. Taken in Arras, the capital city of the historical County of Artois in present-day France, it holds a special significance for me as it is also the hometown of my ex-girlfriend. The focal point of the image is the Beffroir, or clock tower, constructed in the 13th century with stone bricks in the distinctive Flemish style, a nod to the region's past under the Flemish control. Over the centuries, Arras has been under the control of various political entities, including Flanders, Burgundy, Austria, Spain, and eventually France, each leaving its own imprint on the city's architecture and culture.

Despite working with acrylic paints, I sought to emulate the delicate brushstrokes and tranquil aesthetic of traditional Chinese ink-wash paintings, infusing the smokey and monochromatic scene with a sense of serenity and ambience. As I navigate the streets of this enchanting city in Northern France, I am struck by the harmonious blending of diverse cultural influences and aesthetics throughout its history—as well as a reminder of cherished memories.
